Vettel: It’s impossible to please everybody

2010 Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel refuses to be drawn into debate on whether Red Bull Racing favored him, over team mate Mark Webber, in the final stages of the championship battle.

The team, owned by Austrian billionaire Dieter Mateschitz, declined to bring into play team orders when Webber looked their best bet to take the title. For this they were at the receiving end of much criticism from all quarters, particularly the media.

Ultimately the 2010 champion team were proved correct in their decision as Vettel triumphed at the final race in Abu Dhabi, overcoming a massive nine points deficit to Fernando Alonso, while Webber’s challenge faltered.

It was also revealed recently that Webber raced the final four races with a hairline fracture on his shoulder, without the knowledge of his team.

Vettel is reported in The Independent newspaper saying he does not care if people accuse Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko of favoring the 23 year old German, “I am who I am. I don’t need to make any talk about that. I didn’t do it all year and I won’t do it now – it isn’t the time. In the end, I learnt a lot this year and what matters most is when you get back – either to a hotel or to home – and finally you can face yourself in the mirror and know exactly what happened."

“You have to understand it yourself and deep down in your heart you have to know what is going on. That is more important than whatever other people think, or what they write or say. In the end, it’s impossible to please everybody," said Vettel.

He added, “Sometimes it might be seen from a different angle, but as long as you know for yourself, then that is all that matters. I don’t want to make any speeches now, because I haven’t done all year, and it’s not the time to."

It has been a very busy month since he captured the crown and his life has been a myriad of personal appearances and the youngest ever F1 world champion acknowledged, “For sure a break is really important for me. You need that, to get the energy for next year."

He concluded by reflecting, “At the beginning of this season I was printing out pictures of the trophy, because as a sportsman you look ahead. So it’s a very, very nice souvenir, and very special. But inevitably you always look forward to the next step."
