Motorcycle racer dies from injuries

The flat-track motorcycle racer who crashed Aug. 28 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds has died of severe brain trauma, his father said today.

Jesse Phibbs, 21, Leamington, Ontario, was struck by another rider on the first lap of a heat race during MotoGP weekend. A closed head injury was among his injuries. He died Tuesday at a care center in London, Ontario.

"He fought hard," Matt Phibbs said. "There was too much brain damage."

Phibbs spent about a month at Methodist Hospital before being transferred to a facility closer to his home.

Phibbs shattered his elbow and broke a finger and a shoulder. He took stitches to his head and stomach.

Phibbs was in his first professional season. Off the track, he was in the final year of studying to become a radiation technologist. Indy Star
