Englishman has new take on Cup team

An English investor hopes to start a Sprint Cup team where fans can purchase "partnerships" in the program.

The team, called "America's Race Team," would have corporate sponsors on the side panels but a team logo on the hood representing the fans who invest in the program, team officials announced Friday at a news conference at Daytona International Speedway.

Former racer and Red Bull Racing competition director Elton Sawyer will manage the competition side while Michael Wright, a former IMG executive who worked with Jeff Gordon, will guide the business side.

The majority team owner is Daniel Webber, an Englishman who has worked in the United States the last six years. Webber's family is among the owners of CSS Stellar, an athlete representation and marketing business based in London. Among the athletes represented by CSS Stellar is defending IndyCar Series and Indianapolis 500 champion Dario Franchitti.

The team hopes to make its debut in the 2011 Daytona 500. The team does not have a driver nor a shop nor an alliance yet with an established Cup team. The car number will be 76.

The team is selling its partnerships at a cost of $299.95 for adults and $499.95 for a family membership for two adults and two children.
