Toyota to issue yet another recall

Toyota Motor Corp. plans to issue a new recall of about 270,000 cars worldwide with potentially faulty engines — the latest in a string of quality issues to ensnare the Japanese automaker.

Japan's daily Yomiuri reported that Toyota will notify the Japanese government's transport ministry of a recall on Monday.

In Washington, Toyota hasn't formally notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of a recall, but officials expect the automaker will take action on Tuesday. Under U.S. law, an automaker has five days to recall a vehicle after discovering a safety defect.

A person familiar with the matter said about 135,000 of the affected vehicles are in the United States — and the recall will address problems with stalling, noise and unstable idling.

The Associated Press quoted Toyota spokesman Hideaki Homma as saying the company was evaluating measures to deal with the problem of defective engines. Homma said they can stall while the vehicle is moving.

Toyota has recalled more than 9 million vehicles for sudden acceleration problems and other issues.
