Indy Car Minister Hunter Floyd Recovering

Veteran Indy Car minister Hunter Floyd is recuperating from hip replacement surgery here at the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana. "I'm taking physical therapy here," said Floyd March 19. "How soon I will be released depends on how the doctors determine my therapy progress." Floyd, of Brownsburg, has been one of three chaplains of IRL Ministry since March 2008. He, ministry director Bob Hills and Fr. Phil DeRea have shared public services and personal consultation duties throughout last season's IRL Indy Car and Firestone Indy Lights series plus the last Champ Car World Series race at Long Beach, Calif., April 19.

Floyd had spent most of his 26 years of ministering on the CART/Champ Car circuit. He first served under the road racing-oriented Motorsports Ministries, of Santa Rosa, Calif., until CART decided to start its own ministry after 1996. The Canadian-born Floyd brings his background in road and drag racing and rallying to his administration. He was a driver, for example, for actor James Garner's AMC Rambler Baja 500 off road team in 1969.

Floyd turned his life over to Jesus Christ while as a salesman at a North Carolina Ferrari dealership in the early 1980s. A customer's desire to have a ministry in auto racing brought him to Motorsports Ministries and CART in 1983. Floyd also help found Colorado 500 Ministry, a charitable arm of the invitational motorcycle off road event held by former Indy car driver and CART chief steward Wally Dallenbach, Sr.
