02/12/09 Entering the pits during his 150-mile Gatorade Duel qualifying race Thursday, Kirk Shelmerdine ran into jackman Kyle Roland, who was taken to Halifax Medical Center with an injury.

Shelmerdine continued to race and the crew – made up of members of Mayfield Motorsports and Furniture Row Racing – continued to work the remainder of the event.

Roland, who was hit by the center of the front fender of Shelmerdine's car and then seemed to roll on the hood before falling to the ground, was conscious and moving his legs while on the ground on pit road. He is a member of Mayfield’s new team.

“I’m pretty much worried about not hitting the other race cars," said Shelmerdine, who made his name as a championship crew chief for Dale Earnhardt Sr. “The guys with feet have got to worry about not getting run over. That’s the way they told me when I was a crew guy.

“I hate that it happened. I hope he’s not badly hurt, and I’m going to go check on him. That’s a hard fall, especially carrying that weight."

Mayfield Motorsports crew chief Tony Furr said he believed it was a shoulder injury.

“I think there’s something wrong with his shoulder," Furr said. “He did take a hard fall. Hopefully he’s OK. … I haven’t had a chance to check on him myself." SceneDaily
