Rolex 24 Hour 3: Penske Porsche takes lead

The No. 16 Penske Riley Porsche out front

Team Penske, Brumos Porsche and Target/TELMEX Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates continued to pace the field three hours into the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Romain Dumas held the lead in the No. 16 Penske Racing Crown Royal Cask No. 16 Porsche Riley, followed by the No. 02 Ganassi Lexus Riley of Dario Franchitti and the 58 Brumos Racing Porsche Riley of Darren Law.

Farnbacher Loles Racing ran one-two in GT, with the No. 87 Porsche GT3 of Wolf Henzler leading the No. 86 of Kevin Roush.

The first caution period began shortly before the three-hour mark when the No. 40 Dempsey Racing Mazda RX-8 of Jep Thornton hit the tire barrier in turn three.

The average speed after three hours was 124.85 mph.

Alex Gurney: "I just tried to stay on the lead lap. Jimmy J. will do a good job out there …he knows what he's doing and he's been very fast in the lead-up. (asked about the pace being fast) It's slightly faster. We expected high 43s and low 43s seem more like it. (about lapped traffic) It's about what we expected. A few GTs don't stay where you want them to stay but they probably will say the same thing about us. Pretty soon you'll start to see people make mistakes – hopefully people ahead of us so we can move up."

Scott Dixon, #02 Lexus: "The first stint was pretty good. We had a great start and moved into P3. We were running light on downforce, so we started to abuse the tires a little bit and fell back a little in the stint. As it starts to cool off, I think we're going to get a lot quicker as we gain grip. Overall, it's definitely good. We were able to go a couple of laps further than everyone else on fuel. I think our Lexus gets stronger at night, as well."
