Italian drivers Marco Zipoli and Pietro Gandolfi have become the latest two names to sign up for the 2009 FIA Formula Two Championship.

18 year-old Marco Zipoli moves to F2 after just two full seasons of car racing. In 2007, he took six victories on his way to securing the runner-up position in the Formula Azzurra Championship, before graduating to Italian F3 in 2008 with Team Minardi. The Genoa-based driver finished sixth in the championship after scoring one podium.

Pietro Gandolfi began his racing career in Italy, completing five races in the Italian Formula Renault Championship in 2006 before joining the Formula Renault 2.0 Suisse Championship for two seasons.

Marco Zipoli said: “I chose F2 because I think it offers me the best chance of progressing through the racing ranks. I have a lot of belief in the F2 format and the prize of a test with the AT&T Williams F1 team is a great motivation. I’m really excited about racing at tracks like Spa-Francorchamps, one of my favorite circuits, and at other great international tracks like Brands Hatch and Imola."

Pietro Gandolfi said: "I’m very excited about the car, which should be fantastic. For me it will be a step up from Formula Renault, but that just makes me even more motivated. It is great that all the cars are built to the same specification, which means it will all come down to the driver. I’m realistic enough to know that it’s going to be very tough, but I’ve always wanted to compete at the highest level and for me right now the highest level is Formula Two."

Jonathan Palmer, Chief Executive of championship organizer MotorSport Vision, added: "We have received a significant level of interest from drivers from all over the world and it is fantastic to add two young Italian prospects to our growing list of International talent. The 2009 FIA Formula Two Championship is really shaping up to be one of the most competitive formulae in the world and the signings of both Marco and Pietro further add to the competition."
