Chilton joins Carlin for British F3

Max Chilton will race with Carlin Motorsport in the 2009 British F3 International Series. The 17 year-old racer and BRDC Superstar, who will compete in his third season of single seater racing next year, will join the 2008 champions for an assault on the title.

Chilton became the youngest ever driver to compete in British F3 when he raced at the Donington Park round of the 2007 season, on his 16th birthday. Racing in the 2008 season and aged just 17, Chilton claimed two podiums and two pole positions– becoming the youngest ever driver to take an F3 pole. Displaying the raw speed that has sparked interest from the motorsport fraternity, Chilton claimed the fastest lap at the prestigious F3 Masters of Zolder earlier this year, one of the most competitive events in single seater motorsport.

When Chilton completes his first race with Carlin at Oulton Park next year, the British racer will be just one month younger than British F3 champion Jaime Alguersuari was when he began his 2008 championship campaign. The 17 year-old will be hoping to beat Alguersuari’s claim of being the youngest British F3 champion ever.

Carlin took 36 podiums and 14 victories in the 2008 season, and finished first, second and third in the championship standings, with Jaime Alguersuari finally taking the title ahead of Oliver Turvey and Brendon Hartley.

Commenting on his plans for next season, Chilton said, “In 2008 my aim was to be amongst the top runners but next year I’m in it to win. I’m still young but I think I have enough experience to be a serious contender for the title. It’s all down to me now, I know Carlin have the experience and resources to help me succeed in 2009."

Team principal Trevor Carlin added, “We’ve been watching Max’s progress for some time and we’ve seen him develop from a young driver still very much in the learning process, to a very talented and quick driver capable of challenging for race wins. Max showed great potential last year and I think with our help and support he will be a very strong contender in the 2009 championship. We’ve been very pleased with his performance in winter testing so far and I’m delighted he will be racing with us next year."
