AS Roma tops final pre-season test

AS Roma driver Enrico Toccacelo topped the timesheets in final testing today as teams underwent preparations for this weekend's opening round of the inaugural Superleague Formula championship.

Toccacelo stopped the clocks at 1 minute, 18.262 seconds in the morning test session to head the times. He backed that up in the afternoon to be P1 again aboard his Fisichella Motor Sports' prepared car.

Spanish ace Borja Garcia (Sevilla FC) was second fastest after setting his time in the morning while AC Milan's Robert Doornbos recorded the third fastest time of the day – the Dutchman laying down his time after lunch.

Ex-Champ Car driver Nelson Philippe (Borussia Dortmund) and Adrian Valles (Liverpool) were the best of the "rookies' having their first Superleague Formula runs today – setting the 5th and 6th fastest times respectively.

The only major incident of the day came during the afternoon when FC Porto driver Tristan Gommendy damaged his car after hitting the tire wall. The Frenchman had earlier set the eighth best time of the day during the morning session.

The damage to the right front corner of the FC Porto car will be repaired in time for Saturday's first official practice session.

Toccacelo remains confident after continuing on from a strong shakedown run here at Donington Park last week.

"We tried many settings today and we were focused very heavily on improving the car and getting ready for qualifying on Saturday," Toccacelo said.

"I am quite confident for the weekend because we were very fast today on both old and new tires. There are a lot of very good teams and drivers in this championship so I know this will be very tough.

"We are certainly ready to push as much as possible."

There will be no track action tomorrow for Superleague Formula as teams making their final preparations for Saturday's practice and qualifying.
