Portugal team names its driver

A1 Team Portugal has become the first team to formally announce its driver plans for 2008/09 – by confirming Filipe Albuquerque as its main racer for the next two seasons.

The 23-year-old made a name for himself by scoring a podium finish on his A1GP debut in Durban last February, and then helping Portugal move from 17th to 11th in last season’s championship standings.

Now, Albuquerque has been rewarded with the knowledge that he will be the team’s main driver until at least the end of 2009/10.

“We are extremely satisfied and feel privileged to be continuing with Filipe for the next two seasons," said team principal Luis Vicente.

“We firmly believe in his skills. Filipe is extremely fast and talented, as well as very mature and professional. With that in mind, this is the ideal scenario for stability. I can assure the fans, that we’ll do everything possible to win the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport for Portugal."

Albuquerque says he feels privileged to have the confidence from his team to be confirmed for the next two seasons.

“A1GP is an extremely competitive championship, and I’m sure that in the coming seasons, it will reach new heights," Albuquerque said.

“I can only feel honored for the chance I have been given to continue representing my country."

The team also confirmed that it will continue to work with Great Britain in a technical partnership.

Vicente added: “The biggest challenge for the upcoming season will be adapting to the new A1GP Powered by Ferrari car. We believe the team is up to the test of dealing with a far more advanced car from a technological perspective, and hope to be one of the top contenders for the championship."
