Childress auctioning Intimidator’s car

UPDATE “The Intimidator," a one-of-a-kind RCR Series 3 Camaro with direct ties to Richard Childress Racing (RCR) and the legendary Dale Earnhardt, sold Jan. 19 at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., for $575,000.

The RCR Series 3 Camaro (www.rcrseries3.com) is a joint venture between RCR and Total Performance Incorporated (TPI) of Wichita, Kan. “The Intimidator," serial No. 3 of the 50 which will be produced through 2010, is equipped with the actual engine block and other engine components that powered Earnhardt and the No. 3 GM Goodwrench Service Plus Chevrolet Monte Carlo in the 2000 Daytona 500.

The buyer, Jimmy Richardson, principal of Colson Park Capital, Inc., in Hickory, N.C., also has ties to the famed No. 3 GM Goodwrench teams. His Mom ‘N’ Pop’s Old Fashion Sugar Cured Country Ham was an associate sponsor of the team for six years (1991-96), three of which resulted in championship seasons (1991, ‘93, ‘94).

“’The Intimidator’ is a real piece of history and the continuation of a personal relationship with Richard Childress Racing that began in 1991," said Richardson. “We sponsored Richard and Dale for six years and were fortunate enough to win three championships. My family has a museum in Hickory and we plan to park ‘The Intimidator’ right in front of the championship trophies and photos we have. We’re just pleased to now be a part of ‘The Intimidator’ history and excitement."

01/17/08 A highlight on the auction block of the 2008 Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event will be “The Intimidator," a one-of-a-kind Richard Childress ‘69 Series 3 Camaro that honors the accomplishments of Childress with NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt.

The 37th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event will be held Jan. 12-20, 2008, in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Intimidator ’69 Series 3 Camaro is scheduled to roll onto the main stage Jan. 19 at approximately 7:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The bidding for this one-of-a-kind vehicle can be seen live on SPEED.

To pay homage to the No. 3 Chevrolet made famous by Dale Earnhardt Sr., Richard Childress joined forces with Total Performance, Inc. to build the ’69 Series 3 Camaro. The car crossing the block in Scottsdale will be Serial No. 3 and the only one with the official title of “The Intimidator" – a total of 50 ’69 Series 3 Camaros will be built over the next three years. The black, red and silver muscle car commemorates the dynamic relationship forged between Childress, Richard Childress Racing (RCR) and Earnhardt, as well as the no-nonsense, hard-working attitude that defined this special team.

“We’re all excited about the opportunity to auction off The Intimidator, a very special Series 3 Camaro," said Childress, president and CEO of RCR. “This car is about history and tradition, both in stock car racing and muscle car collecting. Brook Phillips and his group at Total Performance have done a fantastic job building The Intimidator and will continue their hard work and attention to detail with the rest of the 49 Series 3 Camaros scheduled to be produced. It’s a great honor for us that Barrett-Jackson asked us to be a part of this year’s show."

The RCR Series 3 Camaro comes with two powerful engines. One is a 525-horsepower, all-aluminum, 427-cubic inch engine built by Keith Craft Motorsports which will allow the owner to enjoy the Series 3 on the street. The alternate engine is a powerhouse SB2, 603-horsepower unit tuned at the RCR engine shop and used in the No. 3 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet driven by Earnhardt in the 2000 Daytona 500. The SB-2 engine was removed from the RCR museum to be included in this commemorative package.

“This Series 3 Camaro will be the only car equipped with ‘The Intimidator’ badging, making it a one-off collectible that is perfect for NASCAR fanatics who also like to drive their collector cars," said Brook Phillips, President of Total Performance, Inc.
