Weekly NASCAR cheating report

NASCAR has fined Hendrick Motorsports Busch Series crew chief Mike Bumgarner $10,000 for unapproved intake manifold modifications. Hendrick Motorsports said it plans to appeal.

The penalty, announced Wednesday, was lighter than anticipated after NASCAR confiscated the intake manifold following Kyle Busch's win in the Yellow Transportation 300 on Saturday at Kansas Speedway. He will keep the win, and the team, which does not compete full time in the series, will not lose points.

"To say we're confused about this situation would be an understatement," team owner Rick Hendrick said in a statement. "The intake manifold that the team used was legal, and we look forward to presenting the facts to the National Stock Car Racing Commission."

Hendrick Motorsports Vice President Doug Duchardt said Sunday that a sister manifold to the one confiscated had been inspected and approved in the past.

[Editor's Note: Too funny. No one EVER wins a NASCAR appeal.]
