Bringing F1 back to Kyalami

Fantastic Racing and Kyalami Race Track are proud to announce their partnership with the ‘F1 in Schools’ challenge. ‘F1 in Schools’ provides the chance for South African schoolchildren to actually have a crack at a real world title.

School teams design model F1 cars using the same technologies as the real F1 car designers use, including CAD, CAM and CFD, and manufacture them on computer-controlled machines. Racing the cars through regional, provincial and national levels will get a team into the next world championships at the Malaysian GP March 2008. They will then be competing for the Bernie Ecclestone trophy which he will present to the ‘F1 in Schools’ world champion.

Fantastic Racing and Kyalami Race Track will be hosting the National Finals on the 5 of October 2007. The teams will get up close and personal with the real single-seater racing world.

The ‘F1 in Schools’ challenge is a competition which increases the awareness and interest in engineering and technical careers in our young learners, and is officially sanction worldwide by F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone. The challenge is to design and manufacture compact, gas-cylinder powered model F1 racing cars and is open to all South African primary and secondary schools.

Teams from all around the country compete for a place in the World Championships in Malaysia where they will get to watch the F1 grand prix and meet the teams.

All teams have equal opportunity to develop a wining design and to manufacture the fastest car in the world. It can be done: a South Africa team claimed this status at the 2005 World Championships.

The competition is not all about speed, there are many factors which will decide who the overall winner will be. They will have to prepare a winning design portfolio as well as show how they went about marketing their team to sponsors. They will have to give verbal presentations and have their cars scrutinized to ensure that they have adhered to specifications. They will also be judged on the graphic design and the branding of their team, all very much like their big brother in F1.
