McNish quickest before rain

Allan McNish and Audi sat in the top spot in the first official practice session Saturday for the Mobil 1 presents the Mobil 1 Grand Prix of Mosport. The American Le Mans Series' first practice session at Mosport International Raceway stayed dry for all of two laps as rain pelted the 10-turn, 2.459-mile circuit just after the green flag.

McNish's time of 1:07.283 in the No. 1 Audi R10 TDI he will share with Dindo Capello was 2.692 seconds ahead of Chris Dyson in the No. 20 Dyson Racing Porsche RS Spyder. Dyson's time was the quickest among P2 cars at 1:09.975 but his next lap saw the Porsche go off track at Turn 5 and into the tire wall. The damage was minimal with headlight cover damage and a little mud on the Porsche's body.

Next was the second Audi of Emanuele Pirro and Marco Werner at 1:11.335, a second ahead of Penske Motorsports' fastest Porsche P2 entry of Sascha Maassen and Ryan Briscoe.

The quickest GT1 car was Corvette Racing's No. 4 Corvette C6.R. Oliver Gavin's time of 1:17.478 was 0.8 seconds better than the second works Corvette of Johnny O'Connell and Jan Magnussen, overall winners at Mosport in 1999 with Panoz Motor Sports. The third Corvette of Ron Fellows and Andy Pilgrim sat third in class at 1:21.580 with a single lap.

Jörg Bergmeister went quickest in GT2 for Flying Lizard Motorsports and Porsche at 1:22.028. The Porsche factory driver led another Porsche, the No. 73 of Jim Tafel and Dominik Farnbacher at 1:23.526. The quickest Ferrari was third in class with the No. 61 entry of Eric Helary and Gianmaria Bruni at 1:23.731.

Once the rain came in, Penske's Maassen was quickest at 1:21.627, three-tenths quicker than Highcroft Racing's Stefan Johannson in the best of the Acura-powered entries.
