Unser Sr. to be Grand Marshal

Open wheel racing legend Al Unser Sr. will be the grand marshal for the Firestone Indy 400 on Sunday, Aug. 5 at Michigan International Speedway. Unser Sr., the two-time open wheel champion, will give the command to start engines for the Firestone Indy 400.

Unser Sr. made 33 open wheel starts at Michigan between 1968 and 1989. Throughout his storied open wheel racing career, he captured 39 victories, one of which came at MIS in 1974. Having placed in the top 10 in half of his open wheel starts here, it is no surprise that he led 345 career laps, ranking ninth on the all time lap leaders list in open wheel events at MIS.

Unser Sr. ranks second at Michigan in career open wheel starts having only two fewer starts than other open wheel great Johnny Rutherford. In addition, he made eight starts in the IROC Series at MIS, capturing four top five and seven top 10 finishes with one win in 1977.

Sunday will be race No. 13 of the IndyCar Series’ 17-race season. Unser Sr. will give the command shortly after 12 noon.
