Cheng to race for China next season

A1 Team China officials have confirmed that Congfu Cheng will be the team’s number one driver for the 2007/08 season.

Congfu Cheng, nicknamed Franky, competed for the team in 12 A1GP races this season with a best result of fourth in the Sprint race in the Czech Republic.

A1 Team China seat holder Liu Yu was impressed with Cheng’s ability when he drove, and will call on him to be the team’s lead driver throughout the third season of A1GP World Cup of Motorsport.

'Motorsports in China is still at its early stage, Franky is currently the best driver to represent China in A1GP,’ said Lu. ‘We also had a plan to improve the performance of our technical team, so there will always be a good car ready for Franky.

‘Our new goal will be winning a race next season. Then more Chinese people will notice that their kids can have a future in motorsports and we will have a bigger driver pool in five years.’

Cheng is currently competing in the National class of the British Formula Three International Series.

Cheng said: ‘This is my first year in British F3, and I am getting faster and faster in the last few races. It is my great honor to be part of A1 Team China again, what I experienced last season made me realize that I must do better job this year to get more A1GP fans in China.’

A1 Team China will also choose a second driver for the new season, using the official test session in Silverstone, Great Britain in August for try-outs.
