Alonso smokes Hamilton, calls him too cocky

Fernando Alonso has blasted Lewis Hamilton for being too cocky after his pole position at Silverstone. And, in an astonishing attack on his McLaren teammate, Alonso admitted being satisfied by Hamilton’s failure to win the British GP.

The moaning Spaniard, 25, said: “It’s always good when the leader of the championship has more difficulties on the track, above all in England and after being pole.

“On Saturday I was faster than him but later, with less fuel, he was able to get pole and it seemed everything was a party. It tastes better finishing ahead of him because you see that everything before will make him more angry for not winning."

Hamilton’s delight at being the first Brit to claim pole at Silverstone since Damon Hill in 1996 was shared by his dad Anthony, who punched the air and danced in the pit lane.

And seeing McLaren mechanics join in the celebrations clearly infuriated Alonso, who insists he is performing better than Hamilton.

The Spaniard made his point by finishing second behind Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen, while Hamilton was third.

Alonso added: “I’m happy about the way the race went and to cut back two points.

“We’ll see what happens in the second part of the championship. Sooner or later the points will come. Since Canada I have been a lot quicker than him. In Indianapolis I could not get past him and in Magny-Cours I had gearbox problems.

“But here we have had a normal race and I got more than 30 seconds of distance between us. With normal races, sooner or later I will be able to reduce the difference between us.

“I should always be one step higher than him on the podium each time.

“But we can’t forget the Ferraris who have been faster than us again."
