Fight breaks out after IndyCar race

Sam Hornish Jr. and Tony Kanaan had a couple of bumping accidents on the track during today's Indy Car race at Watkins Glen and the hot tempers flared up as the two drivers exited their cars.

Hornish jumped out of his car and ran over to Kanaan's car to have some heated words. Hornish then backed off and Kanaan got out of his car to continue the argument when Sam Hornish's father, who is twice the size of Kanaan (as is Sam Jr.) stepped in and pushed Kanaan and told him to back off. Apparently his father didn't think his son was man enough to fight his own battles so dad stepped up. Then other members of the Andretti Green and Penske team, including Michael Andretti, jumped in and a number of guys were knocked to the ground, including Sam Sr. before officials could break it up.

Afterward Kanaan said, "You will have to ask Sam (Hornish Jr.) what happened on the track. He was the one who hit the Team 7-Eleven car from behind. After the race, I wasn't very happy and I got out of the car to talk to him. Sam's dad bumped me and I think that's totally wrong. When something happens on the track, we need to sort it out between ourselves and if we can't sort it out, Brian Barnhart needs to sort it out. Sam's dad can't bump me out of the way like that. I was not going to fight with Sam. I was not going to punch him. We were obviously both hot and were talking about what happened and his dad came in and bumped me."

Hornish said afterward, "I got a run on Tony into Turn 6, but he didn't give me room and ran me up on the curbs," Hornish calmly explained. "I had nowhere to go. Then he runs into me coming into the pits and starts calling me every name under the sun.

"He likes to talk about what a great teammate he is when someone on his team wins, but he can't handle it when he doesn't. It's an unfortunate deal. For a guy that likes to claim he's such a great sport, he's always doing stuff like that. If he wants to get out and talk to me about it afterwards, he can do that. But you don't do it in the car. Someone could have gotten hurt in the pits."

It's clear Sam Sr's hard card should be pulled because Kanaan is right, parents who cannot control their tempers only cause problems.
