Give marshals speed guns, DC tells FIA
Fernando Alonso and Nico Rosberg in Montreal were the main victims of the new-for-2007 ruling, whereby the pit lane is immediately closed upon the deployment of the safety car.
Both racers were out of fuel and had to pit, but were still punished with stop-go penalties.
In the name of safety, the purpose of the rule is to prevent runners from charging to the pits at full speed to make an advantageous pit stop in the moments immediately following the deployment of the safety car.
The most experienced driver on the grid, however, said the implications of the system are "just too random" for a multi-million dollar sport.
"I think it is dangerous for the sport's future," Red Bull's Coulthard wrote in his column for ITV.
The Scot suggests that the FIA should not close the pits but give hand-held speed guns to marshals around the track.
Coulthard explained: "I think we should introduce a fixed speed limit on the track when the SC comes out.
"Then anyone who goes above what is defined as the speed limit gets a penalty.
"It would be the same for everyone, it wouldn't affect fuel strategies, and it means that people wouldn't get penalized unfairly."
