Is Pocono even up for sale?

Bruton Smith’s purchase of New Hampshire International Speedway has triggered considerable speculation about various possible changes in the shape of the NASCAR Nextel-Sprint Cup tour. But the hottest speculation yesterday focused on the future of Pocono International Raceway, the closest track to New York, 90 miles away.

Pocono is privately owned by the Mattioli family, which has steadfastly resisted overtures over the years to sell. However Smith’s $340 million purchase price for the New Hampshire track could change that.

Some here say that the Pocono venue, with its vast acreage and close access to I-80 (less than two miles away), could easily be valued at well over $400 million, a price that could prove irresistible.

The Mattiolis are close to the France family; the late Bill France Sr. was instrumental in persuading them to build the track in the Pocono Mountains. Winston Salem Journal
