Atlantic Seat Available with Brooks Associates Racing

Brooks Associates Racing, one of the top teams in the Cooper Tires Presents The Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda, has a vacant seat on its two-car team effective immediately.

German driver Andreas Wirth, who drove the team’s No. 88 entry for the first three races of the 11-race championship, has been notified that one of his supporters would be unable to honor their commitment to him for the remainder of the season. “I was very disappointed at this turn of events," said Wirth.

Wirth returned to the series after a one-year hiatus and rejoined Brooks Associates Racing this year after driving for the team originally in 2005, when he led the championship until he was sidelined due to injury with two races remaining. He finished inside the top 10 in each of his three starts this season, including a best result of seventh last month at Mont-Tremblant.

“Andreas was easily finishing in the top 10, and with the tracks yet to come, I’m sure he would have been in contention for the podium," said BAR owner John Brooks. “We’d hoped to be finishing what we started in 2005. To lose him at this part of the season is fairly traumatic, but it does open the seat to a driver who is looking for a highly-competitive series. The Atlantic fields this year are within tenths of each other and tracks like Edmonton and Road America will make for some exciting racing. Our hope is we’ll find a driver who was perhaps only partially funded for 2008 and will join our team with an eye toward a full season in 2009."

Brooks Associates Racing is currently tied for second in the championship standings with Finnish rookie Markus Niemela driving the No. 8 Mr. Jones Bar & Kitchen/Rauma Town/Turku Karting entry. Niemela also leads the Rookie of the Year point standings with eight races still remaining on the schedule.
