Superfund Series trying to relaunch in Asia

Formula Superfund, the single-seater championship built out of the old Euro3000 series, will be relaunched for an Asian market next month. formula-3000.net has learned that Martin Schneider, the head of racing development at Superfund, is currently touring Asia negotiating with circuits for the new championship.

Formula Superfund had originally been planned as a European series, but those plans were abandoned at the start of the year after a major accident in testing set back the development of the car.

Organizers were said to be concerned that by starting the season later, they would be at a disadvantage in the competitive European single-seater market, where there are two formula 3000 championships in addition to GP2 and the Renault World Series.

Asia is a new market for single-seaters at this level, however it is one which has proven hard to break in the past. Formula Nippon, which is hugely popular in Japan, struggled to attract spectators when it raced at Malaysia's Sepang circuit last season, and this year's calendar has reverted to an All-Japan format. Meanwhile the Australian-based F4000 cancelled it's Asia winter series, which was due to run on two weekends in China. [Editor's Note: We are aware that Schneider is talking to some of the same race promoters in Asia that Champ Car is talking too. If he thinks he is going to run the Superfund Series as a standalone series he's pipe-dreaming. There is no way the Superfund Series will be popular enough to pay for Schneider's ambitious plans. As they failed in Europe, so too will they fail in Asia. The best thing Schneider can do, though we doubt his pride will allow it, is to take all the money he is plowing into starting his own series and do a deal with Champ Car that will see them be the title sponsor of Champ Car. As far as exposure for Superfund goes, it would be much better and the Champ Car series would be called the Superfund Champ Car World Series. In addition, the wonderful car they designed (Screaming Ethanol V10 in a John Travis designed chassis) could form the basis from which Champ Car could start to develop the specifications for their new 2007 car]
