Indy 500 will have fans in attendance in 2021
Last year, Roger Penske took a financial bloodbath on the Indianapolis 500. After claiming it was impossible to hold the Indy 500 without fans in attendance, IndyCar eventually ran the Indy 500 without fans in attendance.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway tells Associated Press reporter Jenna Fryer that plans for this year’s race have yet to be finalized. Consultations with state and local health officials are underway as the track prepares to host some number of fans at its first major spectator event since the end of the 2019 season.
With the vaccine rolling out, and doctors from John Hopkins University saying the USA should have herd immunity by late April, Covid case counts should plummet and the Indy 500 should be approved for at least 25% capacity, maybe more.
With that planning process not yet complete, the total number of spectators who will be invited to the 2021 Indy 500 has not been decided.
