FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem

F1 News: FIA boss falls, and is ill ahead of Awards Ceremony

The FIA’s annual awards ceremony will take place tonight. It will be live on FIA Youtube channel from 8:00pm CET.

According to the FIA, FIA President Mohammad Ben Sulayem fell “several days ago” and he was taken to hospital for care.

The 62-year-old was due to speak to the media just before 1pm UK time ahead of the FIA’s prize gala on Friday.

The FIA noted: “Several days ago the President [Mohammed Ben Sulayem] took ill and suffered a fall and concussion. He received care in the hospital and will make a full recovery.

“He will attend the Awards Ceremony. But he will do a lot less than initially planned.”

Many suspect this may be an excuse because he does not want to face the media after the nonsense Wolff investigation.

The evening will honor champions from every major branch of international motor sport. The aim of this celebration isn’t merely to highlight the champions of today, but also to showcase the stars of tomorrow. It will also be an opportunity to thank all the people who have made it possible to stage such a diversity of events this year – the volunteers and officials and our Member Clubs.

The 2023 FIA Prize Giving will be hosted by Azerbaijan Automobile Federation (AAF), the City of Baku and Baku City Circuit renowned for hosting one of the most challenging street races on the F1 calendar, the Baku Grand Prix.

The event will also be supported by official partners Rolex, Hankook, Brembo.

•    Rolex, a long-term supporter of motor sport, has been the Official Timepiece of both the FIA Formula One World Championship and the FIA World Endurance Championship for many years.
•    Hankook Tire & Technology, drives persistent innovation to take a leap forward as a global top-tier company paving the way for the future of driving.
•    Brembo, leads the world in the design and production of high-performance braking systems and components for top-flight manufacturers of cars, motorbikes and commercial vehicles.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said: “Tonight we celebrate the champions of our sport in the wonderful city of Baku. We thank our hosts, the Azerbaijan Automobile Federation (AAF) and the City Of Baku and we are grateful for the support of our partners Rolex, Hankook and Brembo in making the annual FIA Prize Giving Gala such an iconic occasion.”

The Masters of Ceremonies will be the sports journalists Harry Benjamin and the 2020 winner of the FIA Formula E Open Talent Call for Presenters Derin Adetosoye.
