Formula 1 Rumor: Antonelli to replace Hamilton at Ferrari

Speculation intensified after Ferrari chairman John Elkann was seen in several deep discussions with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff during the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix weekend.

Sources suggest these talks centered on Antonelli, with Ferrari aiming to sign him before Mercedes locks in a new contract. The rumor mill also hints that Lewis Hamilton may have signaled to Ferrari that 2026 could be his final season, prompting Elkann to explore options for Antonelli in 2026 or 2027, depending on Hamilton’s plans.
Hamilton’s recent performance struggles have fueled speculation about his future. Outpaced by George Russell last season and currently trailing Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc, the seven-time champion may be contemplating retirement to preserve his legacy.
A notable moment at the Hungarian Grand Prix saw Hamilton visiting Antonelli in the Mercedes motorhome. While many assumed it was a gesture of encouragement, some speculate it was a discussion about Antonelli potentially replacing him at Ferrari.
Adding to the intrigue, Hamilton recently described himself as “useless” and suggested Ferrari might need to replace him, hinting at an emotional crossroads. He admitted there would be “tears shed” during the summer break, suggesting that any decision to step away from Formula 1—after a storied career—would be deeply personal and likely involve close consultation with his family during the summer F1 break.
