Sergio Marchionne left in vegetative state from blood clot on the brain

UPDATE Former Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne suffered an embolism while undergoing an operation for an invasive shoulder sarcoma and has irreversible damage to his brain function, and he had failed to tell Fiat Chrysler Chairman John Elkann of the seriousness of his illness, an Italian business website reported Tuesday.

Lettera43, in a report Tuesday citing anonymous sources, said Marchionne, 66, had been diagnosed "long ago" with the invasive shoulder sarcoma — a malignant form of cancer that can develop in the body's soft tissue — and "expressed some doubts" about the effectiveness of the high-risk operation he underwent at the University of Zurich in late June.

Sources told Lettera43, which has led coverage of Marchionne's illness, that during the operation, Marchionne was struck by a cerebral embolism, plunging him into a coma.

It also claims that Marchionne is now being kept alive only by machines, and that doctors said there was no hope of recovery.

07/23/18 (GMM) Sergio Marchionne is in a coma in intensive care, according to reports from Italy.

Ansa news agency reports that, after the Italian-Canadian had to step down from Ferrari and Fiat amid a health crisis, Marchionne is now in what is described as an "irreversible" condition.

Fiat Chrysler, the Ferrari parent, did not confirm that.

But Italian prime minister Giuseppe Conte said: "I learn with deep regret the latest news regarding the condition of Sergio Marchionne.

"In this moment my thoughts go to his family."

La Gazzetta dello Sport said Marchionne has been in a hospital in Zurich for over three weeks, due to complications following shoulder surgery.

Another source said the 66-year-old may have been suffering lung cancer and is currently in a coma.

La Repubblica claims that an attempt by intensive care doctors to reduce Marchionne's sedation so that he may attempt to breathe on his own was unsuccessful.

07/22/18 Sergio Marchionne being in a deep coma have shocked and clouded the Formula 1 paddock at Hockenheim as there have been developments overnight. were the first to sniff that all was not well with the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles when they reported: “Instead of a simple shoulder operation, it was more complex and required complex clinical procedure. An invasive disease emanating from the prostate (cancer?) had already spread in a devastating manner, but only discovered a short time ago."

“An evil that could require further medical investigations and more complex surgical interventions. From here the Marchionne family have drastic decisions to make."

Lettera43 editor Paolo Madron wrote on Twitter: “Things that you would never want to say, but unfortunately the duty of news requires us to do so: Marchionne is in a deep coma."
