Three years ago today, sports fans around the globe eagerly awaited updates on the condition of Michael Schumacher after the Formula One star's horrific skiing accident.

The seven-time F1 world champion was placed in a medically induced coma after receiving critical head injuries after falling off his skis in the French Alps.

Reports have emerged today that the cost of his medical care has reached $24m, according to the Daily Mail.

That's based on the estimated $141,000 a week cost of his treatment, the Sun reports, which features a 15-strong team of medics looking after him at his home in Geneva, Switzerland.

Schumacher was in a coma for six months after he banged his head on a rock despite wearing a helmet on December 29, 2013.

His current condition is unknown as it's a closely guarded secret among the 47-year-old's inner circle.

This month, his manager, Sabine Kehm, said: "Michael's health is not a public issue, so we will continue to make no comment in that regard." Artwork on the location where Michael Schumacher sustained head injuries.

"We have to protect his intimate sphere. Legally seen and in the longer term, every statement related to his health would diminish the extent of his intimate sphere."

However, former F1 teammate Johnny Herbert says Schumacher has "good days and bad days."

And friend Ross Brawn said: "The family are conducting his convalescence in private and I need to respect that. So I don't want to comment on his condition beyond saying we're extremely hopeful we'll see Michael as we knew him at some point in the future."

Schumacher's total worth is believed to be about $600 million before the accident. Fox Sports
