Dominguez to try hand at Superleague

Former Champ Car race winner Mario Dominguez aims to join the Superleague Formula grid as soon as the next round at Adria next month.

The 34-year-old Mexican attended the Brands Hatch race last weekend with the Emilio de Villota Motorsport team, and has targeted making his debut in the football club-themed series as soon as possible.

“I really like this series, it’s a good category and I’m looking to come back to racing in something that excites me," Dominguez told AUTOSPORT. “This kind of car is definitely the way to go, and it’s not that expensive for my sponsors.

“I’m shooting for the next race, and complete the year in the series in preparation for next year. This year has been my first out of a race car since I started competing in 1986, so it’ll take a while to get used to it and get some track time."

Dominguez scored two wins from 86 starts in Champ Car, but thinks this series is quite a different proposition.

“When I raced in Champ Car it was well established, and this series is still in its early stages," he said. “But the cars are similar, it has the Panoz chassis and a lot of power. I’ve spoken to [Robert] Doornbos and [Tristan] Gommendy, and they say it’s similar in some ways to drive, in some ways not at all. I guess I’ll answer that one when I drive the car!"
