Neighbors to block proposed Penske track?

UPDATE Penske Racing has temporarily withdrawn its application for a test track off Mazeppa Road near Mooresville, company officials announced today.

Penske faced a hearing on its proposal before the Iredell County Board of Commissioners tonight. Commissioners have the final say on whether to approve the plans.

"We have elected to withdraw our application to the Iredell County Commission at this time," Roger Penske, chairman of Penske Performance Inc., said in a statement.

Withdrawing the conditional-use application gives the company time to "more fully communicate our plans to all our neighbors and to those others who have expressed an interest in this matter," Penske said in the e-mail.

"This action provides an opportunity for a better and more constructive dialogue, which can only benefit the county and its citizens," Penske said.

11/02/07 Roger Penske would like to build a complex of test tracks at his team’s mammoth headquarters at the Mooresville (North Carolina) Business Park, but neighbors are concerned about the noise and are organizing a fight to try and stop it. Thursday morning a Penske Racing representative met with neighbors to assure them they would do all they could to keep the noise down, but most neighbors say aren't convinced, and they believe with all the new housing coming to the area, in addition to the fact that the Penske complex is in the middle of six neighborhoods, the tracks would not be welcome neighbors. When the Penske proposal went to the local planning board it was voted down 9 to 0.This coming Tuesday, commissioners will vote on allowing a variance to the zoning that would allow Penske to build his test track complex, and a group who oppose the track expect to be out in force.
