McLaren likely to retract appeal – Haug

(GMM) Norbert Haug on Sunday suggested that Mercedes-powered McLaren will retract its protest against the stewards' verdict to dock its championship points in Hungary.

The Woking based team informed the stewards here within an hour of the publication of the verdict late on Saturday that it intended to appeal.

But Mercedes' competition chief Norbert Haug told the German broadcaster Premiere: "We will see whether we still go for the appeal.

"Certainly my position is quite clear that we should drop it."

McLaren, already headed to the FIA's Court of Appeal in the coming weeks regarding the espionage saga, stand to lose 15 points after Lewis Hamilton won the Hungarian grand prix and Fernando Alonso finished fourth.

But Haug said: "We should be strong enough anyway, with the lead in the championship that we already have."
