Kyle Busch down to 3 teams

UPDATE #2 Joe Gibbs Racing, Dale Earnhardt Inc. and Evernham Motorsports appear to be the front-runners for Nextel Cup driver Kyle Busch met with DEI drivers and management on Saturday in Indianapolis. He is scheduled to meet with EMS owner Ray Evernham and drivers this week. J.D. Gibbs, the president of Joe Gibbs Racing, admitted his organization is in the running.

"We've had conversations with them. I'll say that,'' Gibbs said before Sunday's race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "He's got a lot of great opportunities and we're one of them.''

Busch would only acknowledge that he is down to 3-5 teams. "We are still talking to a few teams,'' he said. "We haven't quite narrowed it down to just one. There have been a few teams we have eliminated.'' More at ESPN.com

07/27/07 Kyle Busch is very close to finalizing a deal that will make him the fourth driver in the Joe Gibbs Racing stable. Sources said Busch has crossed Richard Childress Racing and Dale Earnhardt, Inc. off his list of potential teams for 2008 and beyond. Speculation also had Busch going to DEI to replace Dale Earnhardt Jr., but it appears as though the DEI/Ginn Racing merger has taken up most of the executives time at DEI and Busch never felt any warmth from the organization. An announcement is expected sometime over the next week to week and a half, most likely after the big Brickyard 400 weekend. Sources said only the details of the contract remained to be worked out, but that both parties had agreed in principle to a five year deal. captainthunderracing.com

07/02/07 Ray Evernham acknowledged Kyle Busch visited his shop in Statesville, N.C., on Tuesday. He said the visit went well and that he hopes Evernham Motorsports remains on Busch's list when the number of suitors is soon reduced to about four. Evernham said negotiations to extend the contract of Scott Riggs, who has missed the last two races and is 36th in points, continue. But he wasn't quite as adamant that Riggs will be a part of the organization in 2008 as he was three weeks ago. "He's a good little guy," Evernham said. "I just feel bad for what's going on with him." ESPN.com
