Rival cars could sprout BMW wings

(GMM) Rival teams plan to investigate the effects of BMW-Sauber's inventive 'nose wings' after the tower-like appendages debuted in France.

Admitting the mantra that imitation is often the only flattery at the pinnacle of motor sport, Williams' Sam Michael vowed to soon look into the concept at the Grove wind tunnel.

''Their car is obviously working very well with the wings,'' he was quoted as saying by Eurosport, adding that the design affects the air to the rear of the car.

Michael admitted: ''It's like any new part. We haven't tried it in the tunnel, but we'll have a look.''

Ferrari's Ross Brawn, however, noted that the aerodynamic innovation resembles the 'x-wing' (1998) or nose-wing (2001) designs of the past, which were subsequently banned by the FIA.

''I am sure there will be some controversy,'' he said, presumably alluding to criticisms that not only are the appendages aesthetically questionable, but could impede a driver's vision.

''It looks terrible,'' Sam Michael admitted.

But Brawn added: ''If the FIA are happy then obviously we will go away and have a look at the concept.''
