Time for Champ Car to abandon the ovals

In this Champ Car article Gordon Kirby says it's time to abandon the ovals. Those of you who are long-time readers of AutoRacing1.com know that we said 5 years ago "Ovals, stick a fork in them, they're done." We have not changed our opinion, and nor have we changed our opinion of the IRL's concept of what Indy Car racing should be, i.e. oval racing. Penske, Foyt, Cheever, Andretti, Rahal, Ganassi, Honda, Toyota, Chevy et al, they all bought into Tony George's plan for Indy Car racing. All along we maintained it would not work for both safety and popularity reasons, and the fact NASCAR ruled the ovals.

All of our predictions are now coming true, and we just shake our heads in disgust as the sport was set back 10 full years because of the shortsightedness of so many. Now everyone is saying, including those in the IRL paddock, that we need more street and road courses. CART was there in 1995 with exactly that, at its peak. Now, one full decade later, NASCAR is laughing at all the idiots who helped destroy what CART had built by supporting Tony George's "vision." CART was not perfect, but it sure as heck was a lot better than what we have now.

Take a bow Mr. George. Your legacy may last forever. Mark C.
