SPEED Set to Broadcast World of Outlaws Sprint Car Race from Charlotte

SPEED is set to cover the May 27 World of Outlaws Sprint Car race from The Dirt Track at Charlotte starting at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. The race is part of May speed week at Charlotte Motor Speedway, which culminates in NASCAR’s historic Memorial Day running of the annual Coca-Cola 600.

Long-time motorsports play-by-play voice Ralph Sheheen is leading the broadcast, while Sprint Car Hall of Famer Brad Doty is providing color commentary. Series expert Bobby Gerould and NASCAR Race Hub co-host Danielle Trotta are roaming the paddock to gather the latest news and notes.

“SPEED has always been committed to the wide world of motor sports," said Patti Wheeler, SPEED Executive Vice President of Programming & Production. “Memorial Day weekend represents the sport’s brightest spotlight, and presenting the World of Outlaws from Charlotte only adds to that. It’s a great way to begin."

The early season has been an ode to the old-school racers, as series legends Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell have grabbed headlines by scoring seven A Main victories between them. But four-time series champion Donny Schatz (Tony Stewart Racing), who won at Attica (Ohio) Raceway Park this past Friday, has been coming on as of late, finishing in the top five nine times thus far, while Kasey Kahne Racing’s Joey Saldana has already notched three victories en route to an early points lead.

The Charlotte show is the first of five big WoO sprint car races to be featured on SPEED in 2011, including The King’s Royal from Ohio’s Eldora Speedway, the 51st annual Goodyear Knoxville Nationals from Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway, The Nationals Open from Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa. and The World Finals from The Dirt Track at Charlotte on Nov. 5. The latter is a four-hour dirt track celebration crowning champions in Sprint Car, WoO Late Models, Big-Block Modifieds and the Super DIRTcar Series.

Additional WoO-sanctioned races on SPEED include the Dirt Late Model Series Firecracker 100 from Lernerville (Pa.) and Super Dirt Week from Syracuse.
