Dave Rogers to become Kyle Busch’s new Cup crew chief

Joe Gibbs Racing officials announced Tuesday that Dave Rogers will replace Steve Addington as Kyle Busch’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series crew chief after this weekend’s race at Talladega Superspeedway.

Rogers returns to Sprint Cup after four seasons in the Nationwide Series. He guided JGR’s No. 20 team to the Nationwide owners championship last year, winning nine races. The No. 20 has won five races this year.

Addington has led Busch’s No. 18 Cup team for two years, winning 12 races over that span. But Busch missed the Chase For The Sprint Cup this season. Addington will be reassigned to another position at JGR after Talladega.

“We evaluate all of our teams on an ongoing basis and believe this is a change that will make the 18 team stronger as we prepare for next season," JGR President J.D. Gibbs said in a news release. “We think highly of Steve and the job he has done, and we look forward to him remaining a part of the JGR family.

“Dave has proven himself a talented crew chief, and we think he will work well with Kyle. We hope that by making the move following this weekend’s race at Talladega they can use the final three weeks of this season to begin working on communication and setups for the 2010 season."

Rogers first joined Gibbs in 1998, working with the organization’s No. 20 Cup team and driver Tony Stewart through 2004. He moved to Cup as Jason Leffler’s crew chief in 2005.
