Donington moves into next phase of construction

Donington Park's track developments are set to move into their next phase this coming week, as the governing body the FIA prepares to inspect the circuit's modifications so far. The Derbyshire venue is improving facilities and extending its race track in readiness for the British Grand Prix, which it will host for the first time in 2010."We are working with the world's best," the venue's chief executive, Simon Gillett, told Autosport.

"When you work with the likes of Hermann Tilke to run your FIA submissions and track safety, you have got to say that you are betting on the right horses."

Donington, meanwhile, has hosted just one Formula One race to date, the European Grand Prix of 1993, in which McLaren's Ayrton Senna demonstrated a brilliant drive to win in the wet by 83 seconds. The 'new' venue will feature luxury properties built on-site, as well as adding and improved grandstands and car parks. A momentous occasion in February saw the removal of the landmark Dunlop bridge, which be given a new home elsewhere, albeit not over the track itself.
