Single tire proposed for MotoGP in 2008

In today’s Grand Prix Commission meeting at Motegi, the scene of the A-Style Grand Prix of Japan, Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta proposed the introduction of a single tire rule for MotoGP in 2008.

Speaking shortly after the meeting, Mr. Ezpeleta explained to motogp.com the circumstances surrounding the proposal, which will be decided upon at the forthcoming Polini Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix.

“We have made a proposal in the Grand Prix Commission meeting today to reach an agreement between all the different tire manufacturers for the use of tires in 2008, owing to the situation in which some factories believe that they can’t have tires which they think are competitive. We thought that the best possibility is to go to a one-tire rule." said Mr. Ezpeleta. “This is only an initial proposal. If the situation is not resolved by Malaysia, then all relevant parties –the FIM, IRTA and the MSMA- will reflect on the situation and during the Grand Prix weekend make their final decision."

Bridgestone are the current leaders in the MotoGP ‘tire war’, having experienced their best ever season in the World Championship. Rivals Michelin have previously been the dominant force in MotoGP, and have won the last fourteen World Championships since Wayne Rainey took the title on Dunlops in 1991.
