Todt warns McLaren not to appeal

Ferrari boss Jean Todt has warned bitter rivals McLaren to appeal at their peril and risk the prospect of seeing Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso kicked out of the drivers' championship.

After being handed a record £50million fine and stripped of all constructors' points for this year for their role in the spy saga, McLaren are mulling over the prospect of an appeal.

The fact the drivers were not punished was due to FIA president Max Mosley offering them immunity in return for information.

However, should McLaren boss Ron Dennis opt to pursue the issue, a Court of Appeal panel – comprising three independent judges – might not be so lenient.

Even Mosley stated over the weekend he would have booted out the two McLaren stars, but for his own promise.

Todt has also condemned the sanction as he said: "If you go deeply into this sad story, you realize it's a very soft sentence.

"In an appeal you only have lawyers. If they (McLaren) do appeal, my personal feeling is the result should be different.

"It will be very important to see if they appeal or not. If they do I think it would change the drivers' situation quite a lot.

"Even the president of FIA confirmed the penalty was soft, but we know in this business a lot of things are taken into consideration and I can understand that.

"It's much better to have a championship with all the drivers – I'm not arguing about that.

"But lots of things were taken into consideration in order to favor the championship more, rather than this single bad case." Sporting Life
