Hamilton outburst a ‘mistake’ – Dennis

(GMM) Ron Dennis has described championship leader Lewis Hamilton's comments after the recent Monaco grand prix as a "mistake".

McLaren came under intense media and even FIA scrutiny after the prestigious Monte Carlo race primarily because Hamilton suggested he finished second due to the fact that he is the team's "number two" driver.

He then turned up in Montreal last week declaring that Dennis' treatment of himself and world champion teammate Fernando Alonso is "very, very level and very equal", only for Alonso to insist following Hamilton's Canadian win that it is actually he who gets the substandard treatment at McLaren.

Team boss Dennis said: "I think both drivers are highly polished in and out of the car and, obviously, Lewis makes the odd mistake when dealing with the ferocious nature of the media

"But he's learning quick and he's becoming very professional at dealing with the inevitable efforts of the media to get the sound bite."

22-year-old Hamilton said he was "surprised" about how his Monaco comments had been "blown up" and detracted from the one-two finish.

The rookie insisted: "I just don't want it to affect the karma in the team. I have equal opportunity to win the championship. Absolutely."
