Berger ‘understands’ McLaren team order

(GMM) Gerhard Berger has taken a side on the raging Monaco team order debate, arguing that he "understands" why McLaren would want to protect its one-two finish.

The ten-time grand prix winner, who now co-owns the Toro Rosso team, admitted that team orders are strictly-speaking forbidden by the rules.

"Since 2007 team orders are not allowed," Austrian Berger admitted to the newspaper Salzburger Nachrichten.

Berger, though, said he sympathizes with fellow team boss Ron Dennis' position in Monte Carlo; faced with the prospect of a dominant team and two hard-charging drivers.

"When you are a minute in front of third position, of course you want your two own drivers not to fight themselves into the barriers," he said.
