Another Toyota driver 0 for 2
Mayfield is 0-for-2 this season as the veteran tries to revive his career with Bill Davis Racing.
"We did all we could do," Mayfield said after his lap and before he knew whether he had qualified. "Everybody did their jobs. … Everybody needs to go through this one time or another in their career and find out what pressure really is."
While Mayfield was 37th overall out of the 51 cars, teammate Dave Blaney was 14th.
"We just didn't get the job done – end of story," BDR Competition Director Tommy Baldwin said. "When you've got the 37 car [of John Andretti] running on maybe a quarter of the funding, and [it] gets in the show, it's pretty embarrassing."
Baldwin wouldn't give excuses, although the team was limited in its practice time because it was in the back of the line while NASCAR inspected cars before the start of practice. Some cars were still being inspected as practice began.
"There are cars that had the same amount of practice and made the race," Baldwin said. "We just didn't have our act together at the start. When Jeremy got in it, we were a little bit off.
"We made some gains, but not enough. … If our stuff was right, we'd be in the field and happy. We've got to go home; we've got work to do." Scenedaily.com
[Editor's Note: New teams go to the back of the line going into the track and getting inspected, and many times practice starts and cars are still being inspected, putting them at a distinct disadvantage. As for so many Toyotas not qualifying – they are laying low their first year. Their plan is to dominate by year 3 just like they are now doing in the Craftsman truck series. If Toyota were to go in and dominate Cup in their first year there would be a huge uproar in the paddock and by the Xenophobic NASCAR fans. Toyota is quietly taking its licks this year.]
