NHL Racing takes Phanos European Team Cup Lead

Sebastien Bourdais and Graham Rahal of Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing (NHLR) snagged the lead today heading into the second round of the Phanos Champ Car European Team Cup competition by scoring a double podium finish with a win by Bourdais and third place by Rahal.

The NHLR pair was only 2.5 points behind Will Power and Simon Pagenaud of Team Australia heading into today’s race after the two qualifying sessions. But they now sit 9.5 points ahead of the Aussie Vineyards drivers. Power finished today’s race in fourth place while teammate Pagenaud, who clinched the Champ Car Canadian Triple Crown title for them in Edmonton, crossed the finish line 12th.

The strong performance by Dale Coyne Racing driver Bruno Junqueira, who claimed the first podium for his team since 2004 with a second-place finish, along with Katherine Legge finishing 11th, placed the team only one point behind the third place team of the Rocketsports / RuSPORT pair of Alex Tagliani and Justin Wilson, who have scored 54 markers after the first round of the Phanos European Team Cup competition.

The Champ Car World Series will crown a Phanos Champ Car European Team Cup champion next week following the Bavaria Beer Champ Car Grand Prix of Holland. The team with the most points after the two European races will be rewarded with trophies and week-long stay at one of the Phanos Resorts locations.

Champ Car team’s earn points during both the Friday and Saturday qualifying sessions, with first place earning 10 points and each following position .5 points less than the preceding driver (10 / 9.5 / 9 / 8.5 / 8 etc.). Sunday race points start at 20 for the winner with each following driver picking up one point less (20 / 19 / 18 / 17 etc.). The points then are added up for each teammate to determine the standings. Conquest Racing’s points gained by lone driver Jan Heylen will be doubled for each session. (Please see attached document with current standings and points distribution.)

An element of the new partnership between Champ Car and Phanos provides the entire Champ Car World Series organization including executives, team owners, operations personnel and drivers with deluxe housing at a Phanos Resort during their stay in Assen.
