This rumor is upgraded to ‘strong’ today.

The first draft of Formula 1’s 2023 calendar has begun to circulate among the German specialist media.

Just after the Dutch GP last weekend, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali revealed that Zandvoort would have a tweaked race date for 2023.

“It was great to see the enthusiasm, excitement and also the respect of the fans in the Netherlands,” the Italian told De Telegraaf newspaper.

“We look forward to being back here right after the summer break next year.”

The 2023 date of the Australian GP in Melbourne was also already known, after local organizers said Albert Park would host Formula 1 next year on April 2.

But now, the full provisional calendar has been published by Germany’s Auto Bild, which although yet to be ratified by the World Motor Sport Council features a record 24 grands prix.

However, that number could drop back to 23 dates if China is not able to host its round in Shanghai for the fourth year in a row due to the ongoing covid situation.

Domenicali also suggested China’s political situation is being monitored.

“We have to be careful. We want to draw attention to positive values,” he said.

Paul Ricard’s French GP does not appear on the leaked 2023 schedule, and a deal for a highly anticipated race in South Africa has not been finalized.

Bahrain, as is now customary, will open the 2023 world championship, while Imola, Monaco and Barcelona will comprise the first ‘triple header’ of the season in late May and early June.

A triple header on the American continent will then take place in late October-early November as Formula 1 dashes from Austin to Mexico and then Brazil.

Las Vegas’ first Formula 1 race is set to be the penultimate round of 2023, with Abu Dhabi bringing up the rear as usual.

Further fodder coming out of the Spa weekend requires we update our rumored 2023 F1 calendar.

The word is that Belgium will take the July 23 slot, fitting in the week before Hungary (July 30). This will follow on from a double-header in Britain (July 2) and Austria (July 9). The Dutch will take over the current Belgian date (August 27) and Italy will follow on September 3. Singapore will have its usual September 17 date.

Qatar did want to be in the spring, but it has just demolished the pits at Losail and the new buildings will not be ready until the autumn.

China, if it happens, may follow the week after Australia. Makes sense from an air freight sense, already being in similar time zones

Red Bull boss Christian Horner has admitted that the addition of two more races to the already packed 22-race calendar is going to be challenging. However, a venue like Las Vegas would only add to the growth and spectacle of the sport.

Speaking to SkyF1, the Red Bull boss said that he’d favor an extra weekend in both Vegas and South Africa:

“When you talk about 24 weekends out of 52 in a year, it does feel too much. But then when you look at the venues that are coming in, you think ‘okay, I’d definitely go an extra weekend for Vegas’. If South Africa was on the calendar, I’d definitely do an extra weekend for that as well.”

The release of the 2023 calendar is being held hostage while F1 gives Kyalami time to scrap up enough pennies to host a race. We removed it from our rumored calendar below for now because it appears they need another year to find the money.

Lewis Hamilton wants the race, and F1 has made him so rich he should put up the sanction fee and promote the race. He’s been in Africa this past week looking up his ancestors.  Perhaps he stopped at Kyalami with his check?

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has confirmed that the 2023 season will see a bump in the number of races due to a ‘very, very high’ demand for the sport. In a call with Liberty Media investors, Domenicali indicated that the new calendar could feature a maximum of 24 races. He also said that the details of the calendar should be out around early October.

And one rumor has Spa saved, but running in April, which could mean frigid temps. Hence, until we see the actual calendar, some dates are just speculation, especially Spa in April.

Spa in April sees daily high temperatures from 49°F to 57°F, rarely falling below 39°F or exceeding 69°F.

“Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali expects to confirm details of next year’s schedule ‘around early October,’ he told Liberty Media investors on an earnings call. Domenicali indicated the 2023 F1 calendar is likely to feature the maximum permitted 24 races. The series is endeavoring to reorganize some of its rounds to reduce the amount of travel and therefore cut costs and emissions.”

Domenicali further stated:

“The demand is very, very high for races. We cannot [say] anything more than what we are saying because we are, of course, finalizing all the details. But we for sure expect to have a couple of races more than this year, but less than 25, that’s for sure.”

August 5, 2022

On today’s 2nd quarter earnings call, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, was asked how many races he expects on the 2023 calendar.

His answer – A couple of more than this year’s 22, but less than 25.  That means F1 expects next year’s race calendar to include 24 races, one less than we show below, so expect one of the tentative races to not happen.

More changes to the rumored draft F1 calendar based on the latest rumors coming out of Hungary.  Supposedly, the calendar is nowhere near set in stone.

  • Canada does not want to go back-to-back with Miami in May and wants to keep its June date
  • There may be a 1-week break between Saudi Arabia and Australia
  • Australia will be back-to-back with South Africa if it happens
  • Austin, Mexico and Brazil will be a triple-header
  • Singapore, Japan and China (if it happens) could be a triple header
  • Las Vegas will go back-to-back with Abu Dhabi

BREAKING!

It appears that the South African GP at Kyalami will happen in 2023. Formula 1 and DHL have signed a 5-YEAR contract to ship all goods and cargo to South Africa. (via insider sources).

Nevertheless, South Africans should temper their elation for the moment as there is still a kink in the supposed development, as no official word has yet been forthcoming regarding hosting the event.

Tickets are most likely going to cost around 5000 South African Rand, which is around 300 Euros.

Whether anyone can pass on the neutered Kyalami circuit is quite another story.

We have real concerns that the modified track, although nice, and safer, has zero places to pass for the modern F1 car.

Kyalami Layout 1961 to 1988

The old layout had a long straight with a kink leading downhill into Turn 1 where slipstreaming enabled overtaking.  Now, with the new layout shown below, all passing zones appear gone.

What were they thinking?

They made many improvements to the track. It is nice. However, the problem with Kyalami is that there are no straights long enough to enable passing. The race will be a parade.

(GMM) Belgian GP boss Vanessa Maes has played down claims Spa-Francorchamps is definitely missing from the provisional Formula 1 calendar for 2023.

Dutch media made the claim earlier this week, adding that French GP host Paul Ricard will also almost certainly lose its race as well.

“It would be a big shame to lose Spa,” said world champion Max Verstappen, who was born in Belgium.

“It’s my favorite track in the world.”

Carlos Sainz thinks Formula 1 is chasing the money in places like Las Vegas and Miami, and hopes that a race rotation scheme could rescue the embattled European events.

“I understand that France or Spa maybe cannot afford to be in the calendar every year but I hope that at least we can go there every two or three years,” said the Ferrari driver.

Spa-Francorchamps boss Vanessa Maes, however, says the latest news about the Belgian GP and the unpublished 2023 calendar is very much unofficial.

Belgian GP boss Vanessa Maes denies axe rumors

“I would very much like to know the source,” she told La Derniere Heure.

“I have taken this information and been assured by the FIA that there is no concept calendar going around among the teams at all. It’s pure speculation,” Maes insisted.

“There’s definitely talk – that’s for sure. We are nearing the end of our contract, just like Monaco and Le Castellet, and we are still negotiating an extension.”

Indeed, she confirms that a delegation representing the Belgian GP met for talks with Formula 1 at Silverstone.

“All I can say about that is that it was positive,” said Maes. “They are aware of the improvements we made to the track last winter and we also showed them our plans to add more entertainment to this year’s event.”

She said she has also spoken personally with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.

“He told me that he wanted a future with Spa-Francorchamps, but that he couldn’t say how and what yet. I have faith in it and we should know in a few weeks, normally before our race at the end of August,” said Maes.

“Even if China and South Africa are confirmed, there might still be one or two places. So there’s no need to panic and I’ll keep the faith.

“Spa-Francorchamps is part of the history of Formula 1.” If China, South Africa and Spa are all confirmed, there will be 25 races in 2023.

July 5, 2022

When in doubt, follow the money and South Africa race organizers may not have enough of it for the time being, unless Lewis Hamilton (who wants the race) coughs up the difference.

Chairman of Motorsport South Africa, Anton Roux, claims Covid restrictions in the country could mean a South African GP is “in jeopardy” for the time being, which could give Spa a reprieve for a year.

South Africa currently has a restriction in place whereby sporting events are only allowed to be held at 50% capacity, limiting the number of people present – and, thus, the amount of revenue that can be brought in from such events.

Roux, also a member of the FIA Senate, explained that tourism accounts for a majority portion of the crowd at certain race weekends, so such restrictions would be problematic for the holding of a race.

“What most people don’t realize is that if you look at a host country hosting a Formula 1 [race], 60% of the spectators are not from the host country,” he told South African TV Channel eNCA.

So if you look at some of the events, such as the ones in Texas, who had 380,000 spectators last year, which I think was more spectators than at the Olympic Games, and 60% of them are foreigners coming in.

“Now, I don’t necessarily think we’re going to get that amount of spectators. But you know, we could get between, let’s say, 250,000 and 300,000 spectators over the period.

“And South Africa is a distance to travel, so they’re not going to come here for the event and go back, they will spend their week in the Mpumalanga, they will spend some time in the beautiful Cape. So the inflow from tourists, but as well as the teams, will be significant.”

“I think the COVID restrictions is a big challenge, and I think if we’re going to be at a stage where we will have 50%, then that might place the whole event in jeopardy,” he said.

“You know, we’ve had an event earlier this year, an international event, where we allowed 2000 spectators, but we had 1800 employees at the circuit.

“I mean, it just doesn’t make sense if you can’t go to full capacity and we can’t get approximately 90,000 spectators (per day) into Kyalami.”

July 5, 2022

(GMM) Spa-Francorchamps and Paul Ricard are missing from a newly-circulating provisional draft of the 2023 Formula 1 calendar, according to two authoritative newspapers.

De Limburger, a Dutch newspaper, claims next year’s schedule will begin on March 5 in Bahrain following an official three-day test at the same Sakhir circuit.

“Two weeks later, Saudi Arabia is next on the provisional calendar, followed a week later by Australia,” revealed correspondent Erik van Haren.

He said the schedule could swell from 23 to 24 grands prix if China releases its covid measures sufficiently to allow for Shanghai’s return after a three-season absence.

As for the current races in France and Belgium, they have been “excluded from the calendar”.

“Spa-Francorchamps can still hope a little for a one-year extension, if a new race in South Africa doesn’t happen,” van Haren added in a report echoing similar claims in De Telegraaf newspaper.

The reports said Monaco could also get a new deal.

June 23, 2022

The 2023 F1 calendar has not yet been confirmed. However, the following draft 24-race calendar is emerging.

Monaco and Spa are not yet signed, but progress is being made on those negotiations.

It appears certain the French GP will drop off the calendar in 2023.  Whether it returns in 2024 on the streets of Nice depends on politics.
