MotoGP: Martin wins Phillip Island pole with lap record

Jorge Martin has claimed pole position for the Animoca Brands Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix.

The #89 Prima Pramac Racing rider, who had never ridden a MotoGP bike at Phillip Island before this weekend, broke Jorge Lorenzo’s All Time Lap Record which dates all the way back to 2013 when he set a 1:27.767 on his Ducati Desmosedici.

A recovering from major surgery, #93 Marc Marquez was also under lap-record pace in taking second in Q2. There were echoes of 2019 as Marquez produced another magic save while chasing pole position at the Australian Grand Prix.

For the third time in 2022, Marquez will line up on the front row of the grid as he hunts a 100th premier class podium, but is his arm strong enough to win a race yet?

#63 Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) will start on the outside of the front row, the first of the title contenders.

In fact, the top three in the Championship are third, fourth, and fifth, with Aleix Espargaro to head up Row 2 and Fabio Quartararo set to grid up right next to him.
