NASCAR Rumor: Mexico City Cup race to be cancelled (Update)

Per Bob Pockrass: There have been rumors for several weeks that the Mexico race won’t happen, even though NASCAR brought drivers to Mexico last week and had Mexican media at COTA this past weekend. I talked to NASCAR this morning. They are adamant that the Mexico race is good to go.

On Friday, a source within NASCAR explained to Racing America On SI that the rumors of NASCAR not racing in Mexico City this season are baseless, and that the sanctioning body remains committed to its first NASCAR National Series events in Mexico since the 2008 season. The source said that the race in Mexico City is, “Unequivocally happening,” and that NASCAR is full-speed ahead as far as the race is concerned.

Rumor has it that the first-ever NASCAR Cup race in Mexico City, slated for June 15th, will be cancelled.

No idea if this rumor is true, however, given the USA’s war on the drug cartel’s in Mexico currently, it simply may not be safe to get NASCAR personnel to and from Mexico City safely at this time.

If you remember, NASCAR has been hyping this up for a long time now. And then they officially announced it in August 2024.

NASCAR executive VP, Ben Kennedy had said, “When we talk as a leadership team about where we feel like our biggest growth opportunities as a sport is, international is always one of the first things that comes up.” If this was the case, why are they rolling back on it now?

NASCAR hasn’t confirmed anything yet, but the rumor comes from a usually reliable source.

The Instagram page, ‘nascarrumornostalgia’ in their recent post wrote:

“Late night wild rumor post. Around the Cup and Xfinity garage, the rumor is spreading quick that NASCAR may not be going to Mexico this year after all. Instead we could be seeing more racing on the Daytona Road Course that weekend instead of Mexico City. I’ve even heard that some teams are already looking to book hotel rooms in Daytona for that weekend.”
