2007 IRL schedule to expand

The IndyCar Series is expecting to add at least two events for 2007.

“It is too early to confirm how many races we will have next year," said John Griffin, IRL vice president of public relations. “Our goal and objective is to expand our schedule while staying within the time frames we established for this year. People can expect a 2007 schedule in the near future."

The IRL plans to start the 2007 title chase in mid to late March, then run through the early part of September per ABC TV's wishes.

IRL officials confirmed off the record that the 2007 schedule could have as many as 18 races, though 16 remains the most likely number. If 18 the mix would be 12 ovals, 3 road courses and 3 street races.

The twelve ovals are the eleven ovals, with the new Iowa Speedway being added. A street race in Los Angeles outside of Dodger Stadium remains a possibility as does San Antonio, Texas. There has also been talk of an IRL race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
