FIA to allow race drivers at Silverstone test
Multiple left-rear blow-outs were experienced during Sunday's race, while cuts were discovered on a number of tires, including those of ultimate winner Nico Rosberg. This led to safety concerns being raised, with the FIA vowing to find a quick solution.
Having met with Pirelli chiefs, race director Charlie Whiting and F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone after the Grand Prix, FIA President Jean Todt has now made it clear that teams will be able to run regular drivers at the test in a bid to aid development.
"Our priority is to ensure safety for all in Formula 1 and we believe the incidents at Silverstone represent a genuine safety concern for the drivers," Todt explained. "We have thus taken the decision to alter the Young Driver Test to allow teams to use drivers they deem fit to carry out tire development work in a bid to solve the problems we saw at the British Grand Prix. I believe it is fitting to carry out this work at the circuit upon which the issues were manifested."
Following last month's International Tribunal verdict, Mercedes remains banned from the July 17-19 test, which could be extended by a day to accommodate young drivers.
The FIA also aims to modify Article 12.6.3 of the technical regulations, a move that would allow Pirelli to make tire changes without unanimous support from the teams.
The World Motor Sport Council is now expected to formally pass the changes.
