Supercars news: Reynolds takes epic win over Kostecki in Surfers

David Reynolds has won his first Supercars race in five years, beating Brodie Kostecki to give Ford a double on the streets of Surfers Paradise.

There was a 0.18sec margin in the end as a late safety car got in between to huge fights in which they exchanged the lead before Kostecki missed at apex to lose the lead for one final time prior to the safety car, which was caused by a James Golding attempt to rejoin which trapped a hapless Scott Pye into the fence.

“I’m just over the moon, it’s been a long time coming for Penrite racing, they’re one of the herds working bunch of people I’ve ever worked with,” the outgoing Penrite Racing driver said.

“It’s everything totem and it was a huge performance by them..the last three years have been great.

“He (Kostecki) definitely was pushing me, I could feel it and I thought I was going to get crashed. We had a chat before the race and I told him I’m going for the win, and if I have to crash into you and you lose the championship, so be it. It was a hard fought race…it was awesome, I loved it.”

Less than 24 hours after winning by a near identical margin over Shane van Gisbergen, Cam Waters (No. 6 Monster Energy Ford Mustang) finished third in Race 26, as the Ford Mustangs swept this weekend’s two races.

Reynolds’ teammate and rookie Matt Payne (No. 19 Penrite Ford Mustang) finished fourth in today’s race, the best finish of his young career to date. He was followed home by van Gisbergen (No. 97 Red Bull Ampol Chevrolet Camaro) in fifth.

With Kostecki and van Gisbergen scoring identical points across the weekend, the West Australian’s championship lead returns to 131 points heading to the season finale in Adelaide next month.

Today’s race was book ended by two Safety Cars triggered by crashes. James Courtney, Macauley Jones, and Tim Slade all forced to retire from a Lap 1 tangle, while Scott Pye crashed out while trying to avoid a spinning James Golding while running eighth on Lap 78.

The 2023 Repco Supercars Championship now heads to the streets of Adelaide for the VAILO Adelaide 500, where this year’s championship is set to be decided between Kostecki and van Gisbergen over the November 23-26 weekend.
